Today's My Birthday and I'm...

...going gray. I've been getting gray hairs for awhile now, and I've pulled out quite a few of them. But they just keep coming and it's getting way out of control now. I've tried dying it, but I don't know if I'm using the wrong stuff because my gray hairs won't hold color for very long. Add to this the fact that I'm kind of lazy and I don't want to have to color my hair all the time, I'm thinking of letting it just go gray. Graying with style though.

I looked up some gray hair styles and celebrities with gray hair and I have to admit some of them look stunning - take a look:

Only Nichole's roots are gray here

The thing to understand is, not all of those gray haired beauties are wearing the natural gray hair mother nature has given them. Even gray hair can be greatly enhanced with rinses, color and bluing agents to give a brighter, more silvery shimmer!

But these women are a lot older than I am, and I only have a little bit of gray showing - most of my hair is still brown, so I'm not sure I'm ready to flaunt the gray yet.

But think about this - I read where one woman calculated that she had spent, over the 25 years that she'd dyed her gray hair, $65,000. I could really use a $65,000.

Some say the key to going gray is to not sport the granny look. Check out these hairstyles:

In London, silver hair is all the rage for the under 25 crowd.

I personally believe all these women look stunning, almost like angels. So, what do you think? Should I gray gracefully, or should I fight it as long as I can?

To gray, or not to gray: that is the question.

  1. I'm getting gray, too, and I don't want to dye. I think I'll slowly add some highlights here and there to be the bridge between the darker and lighter phase. I think gray hair is stunning, feminine, and incredibly bold.

  2. I think they all look great, but I am a dye person. I dye my hair anyway, not cause I am going grey but because I love the dimension I get! If you want to dye for a while go to a professional. The at home stuff just doesn't cut it!

  3. Happy birthday! I personally think that natural hair always looks better than dyed hair - but that's just me. My friend started going grey at 25, and she's completely silver now, it looks amazing. Do whatever makes you feel the best about yourself though, since we all put a lot of our self-esteem in our hair.

  4. One of my good friends went totally grey by age forty and it looked fabulous. She dressed sporty and had a sporty hair cut that worked well with the wiry texture of the grey. Anyway, I like natural hair. My husband is going pretty grey and I think it looks classy. Very Richard Gere. Just wear your grey with confidence, hey?

  6. You know what? I have always LOVED gray hair. I've always thought I'd keep mine longer and style it and keep it looking beautiful. :)

  7. OMG, I think we were reading the same post on going gray online on the same day! Seriously! Freaking me right out in the best way.

Of course I'm probably older than you but I'm facing this right now. In addition to the other ways my appearance has vastly changed the past few years (unavoidable, due to surgeries) now I've just turned 40 and the gray is everywhere. Like yours, mine just won't hold color- the second I wash the color out, the same strands are still gray no matter how dark the rest is-- but that's not the thing that gets to me.

The last time I colored my hair, after years of doing it (alternating between blonde and black hair over the years on whims) I had a horrible, serious allergic reaction to the dye and now I'm really afraid to do it ever again.

Even though it was the darkest dye I've ever used (yes, I was reliving the teen Goth phase I never had...) my throat swelled, hives everywhere, and I stayed that way for days. It was bad.

After having 15 surgeries within two years time (April 09-March 11) I am getting my brain around all this stuff, I hope, and I think I've just about come to my decision, and actually had planned to blog about it this week (if I end up doing it I'll be sure to link back to this post.)

Reading the statistics linking hair dye (especially dark dye) to cancer is scary too- but nothing more so than the fact I don't ever want to feel again like I felt for the three days after I used it last time.

So far, at least, the strands look truly silver...if I take after women in my family, hopefully it will be and I'll just look a little more like a Muppet than I already do as the transformation progresses. I'd be lying though if I didn't admit that it scares the living hell out of me.

Thank you so much for this post. Whatever you decide, remember, you're beautiful.

  9. I think streaks of blue would make you look even younger. Go for it.
