"Jag and I broke apart like we'd been caught making out by my mother."
~ Vi from Possession by Elana Johnson
First of all, I love the first person voice of Vi. Love it. She's so real and funny. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, and I honestly spent a lot of time feeling confused as I read it. Just when I thought I was about to understand something, the bottom fell out and I was left in confusion again. But then I realized that the confusion is the brilliance of the story. Elana does a brilliant job of putting us right in Vi's head. Vi doesn't know what's going on or who to trust so neither should we.
Second, loved Jag. Love him. Still don't know if he should be trusted, but I really, really hope he can be.
Thirdly, the world-building is very creative and well done. I wanted to know more about certain areas, but I get a feeling we will in the next book.
Lastly, the end gave me mixed feelings of horror and confusion, but it is still brilliantly executed. Vi doesn't know what's going on and neither should we.
Possession reminded me of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield and Candor by Pam Bachorz, but Elana did an excellent job of melding these elements together to create something completely different. I'm really, really hoping that her next book, Fugitive, which will be a companion book to Possession, will have some answers. Please don't leave Vi and us hanging Elana.
