Indulgence

“Imagination without study is the self-indulgence of the intellect.” - David Lindsey

I love butter! Some people indulge in chocolate, I indulge with butter.  It is my comfort food.  Unfortunately my wasteline can't afford such indulgence anymore.  Now that I'm meeting my walking goal most weeks - I think it's time to add another goal.  Cut back on the butter.  This isn't going to be easy, but I've found in the past when I don't indulge in my butter fix, my waste line goes down.

I have another indulgence that is becoming a problem too.  I indulge in wild flights of my imagination.  Is this a bad thing? It is for me I'm afraid.  I think that this indulgence is what is keeping me from meeting my 5000 words a week goal.  I spend way too much time brainstorming and researching and not enough actual writing.
When I first decided to start writing, my imagination was in a deep slumber.  I didn't have any writing ideas.  I chose to write anyway and my imagination woke up and now refuses to rest.  It's so exciting to have all these ideas now.  Everyday I get a new idea to write about.  I spend way too much time playing the what-if game.  So, my new goal is to spend less time fantasizing about what to write and spend more time actually writing.

What about you - do you suffer from this indulgence?  How do you overcome it?

Can anyone give me some ideas on some less fattening, but still tasty substitutes for butter?

  1. Olivio is what I use for butter. I love love love butter too and I still cook with it. I think pancakes come out better if made with real butter, but I spread Olivio on top of the pancakes.

As for imagination, I think brainstorming is good! I brainstorm all the time and then pick the best idea.

    Hope this helps!

  2. You're making me hungry.

I think moderation is key in every aspect of life. That's not to say I practice that but, if I did, I'd be better off.

To be honest, I don't think using your imagination when it comes to fiction, though--is never a bad thing.

  3. Try Gay Lea spreadables light. I used it on crumpets and when it melts into the little holes it is heavenly.

I'm also trying to write instead of just thinking about it. Go you.

  4. I like that whipped butter. From what I remember, it is lower in calorie that regular, but it's been a long time since I checked so you may want to make sure.

  5. Hi, my name is Dawn and I'm obsessed with dr. pepper. There's just something about that beautiful maroon can and decident frothy soda that it cradles so lovingly.

I can't go an hour without a mere sip. I hate to leave the poor fellows in the freezer so long, but I have to have it cold...it's even better with small flakes of iced dr.pepper mixed in.

I'm totally lost without my DP and have made many panicky trips to the store for one majestic cola.

  6. I love butter too. And chocolate. And cheese. And cream cheese. And cookies. I'm with Wendy (no surprise), all things in moderation and things are okay. Except on birthdays and holidays. Or after a rejection.

Imagination though, there can never be too much. My stories are better if I spend a long time on the imagination side :)

  7. My indulgence is Starbucks Coffee Frappucinos in a bottle. I buy them by the case!

  8. For me brainstorming is not an indulgence; it sometimes serves as a way for me to avoid starting a new project -- something that almost always intimidates me.

  9. Aubrie - thanks for the Olivio tip - I'll have to check it out. I use olive oil mostly for cooking now, but somethings just need better. Toast. I love toast and butter. What am I going to put on toast.

Terry Lynn - never heard of Gay Lea spreadables have to check it out. I'm so glad that you know what I mean. To much thinking not enough writing. Thanks for the encouragement. Good luck to you too.

Diana and Wendy - I think that imagination is a wonderful thing, but lately I'm all imagination and little writing - need to get back on track.
Moderation is the key - I need to get some of that. Diana I love all those things too. Cheese and butter are my weakness. Not ready to get rid of the cheese yet though.

Dawn - I'm not a soda pop fan, but I feel your pain. I have to have my drinks icy cold too.

Caroline - avoidance might be my problem too.

  10. Hi Mary, thanks for stopping by my blog:-) Just wanted to say hi! Mmmm butter haven't had it since I went vegan. Have you ever tried soy butter? I don't remember if the taste is too different or not because I'm so used to it, but that might work as an alternative. Very pretty blog!

  11. I can't help you with the butter thing because the truth is, nothing tastes like butter does.

As for the writing and ideas, I always keep a folder full of ideas of new stuff to satiate that need. It's kind of like a teaser for me. When I finish what I'm working on, I get to play with the stuff in the folder. Like candy on a string. ;)

  12. If I could convince myself to exercise, I could add even more of those delicious foods to my daily dose of moderation. At least you're walking :)

And I agree with Frankie about your blog's prettiness!

  13. I love butter too! I have the fantasizing about writing problem too. The only thing that works for me is just to sit at the computer and write. I can think about it all day but until I put my butt in the chair and write it down I don't have any story. Most days this is easier said than done :)

  14. Hi Mary! Thanks for Following me. I understand your butter addiction, mine is cheese, not so good for the body. But yum!

Writing is an old love of mine that has recently been rekindled. Why do we procrastinate anyway? Weird, because we love writing. But sometimes I'll find myself READING about writing more than writing! Ha!

  15. Butter? No. Chocolate. It's dangerous for me to have it in the house, so I usually don't. I like what Brenda Susan said about more time reading than writing, but reading inspires me. When I'm stuck on my own stuff, it's so refreshing to lose myself in somebody else's.

What about olive oil? Do you like that?

  16. My weakness is chocolate and butter. There is nothing that can compare to butter. It is delish. When I first tried to get rid of some unwanted pounds, I used I can't believe it's not butter spray. Nothing else was good enough. I've gone back to the real thing though. I love love love butter!!!
As for writing, I've been putting it off. I need to get back into it. =)

  17. I think cream cheese is more healthy per tablespoon. I like it on my toast. As far as writing indulgences go. I have a problem constantly wanting to start new books before I finish the one I'm working on. I love the new idea high, but then I learned that the finished book high is so much better! And the edited, finished book high is the best of all.

  18. I like Brummel and Brown, I think it's a little better than butter? It seems like a little of that goes a long way...

My indulgence is dialogue. I can't get enough of it, and so my first drafts have a lot of dialogue in them. It's a good thing when I edit I can add everything else. My stories would be very bare... LOL :)

  19. Hi Mary!

Your blog is amazing, I hope your able to get all your thoughts together into a novel - I'd love to read it!

As for butter substitute... Brian swears that the "I can't believe it's not butter" spray tastes as good as regular butter. He uses it on his toast, potato, whatever you would put butter on and it's fat free. Maybe try it out and see if you like it.

  20. Best of luck with your goals!
Might I suggest that it's not necessarily the butter you need to cut back on but the carbs (bread, potato, etc...) that you're putting the butter on. A very healthy way to lose weight is the zone diet. It emphasizes eating meat, vegetables, and fruits. If you want more info about it, let me know, I can email you some.

  21. Yum...butter. Yum....chocolate. Sorry, I'm of no help. I have no self restraint in the eating or the imagination category. Especially this time of year. You are a good inspiration for me.

I didn't use butter on my pancakes today. And I only used Olive oil spray to cook with. Yay me.
